It is easy to assume engine oil only wears out from mileage. If a car travels just a few thousand miles a year, the oil may look like it has barely been used compared with a vehicle that sees a daily commute.


Mileage is only part of the story. Engine oil also deals with moisture, fuel contamination, temperature changes, oxidation, and repeated cold starts. A lightly driven vehicle can still need an oil change even when the odometer has barely moved since the last service.


Short Trips Can Be Harder on Oil Than You Think


A vehicle that is driven infrequently often spends much of its time making short trips. The engine starts cold, runs for 10 or 15 minutes, and shuts off before the oil and other components stay fully hot for long.
